When asked, “How do you empower students to become creative, critical, and inclusive thinkers who pursue lifelong learning and contribute to the global community?” we point to our Grade 5 PYP Exhibition (PYPx) as one of the tangible examples of how we live out both our NIS mission and the IB’s call “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better, more peaceful world.”
After several weeks of exploration, our students embarked on focused inquiries into Sustainable Development Goals, ranging from climate action, gender equality, health and wellbeing to biodiversity - translating these global priorities into personal passions or interests, whether working independently or in collaborative teams. Guided by teacher-mentors and homeroom teachers, they honed the skills of genuine researchers: crafting research questions, conducting campus-wide interviews, and analyzing data to deepen their understanding. As a result of their investigations, each group spearheaded a concrete action. Some secured regular gym access for elementary students during recess, initiated food drives to support local families in need, while others launched student-led wellbeing and art clubs.

The showcase of the PYPx in April transcended typical presentations to become an immersive experience. Guests journeyed through interactive stations, examined student-created data visualizations, read Japanese haikus, and engaged with multimedia art pieces that brought each inquiry to life. A Grade 2 visitor exclaimed, “Going around the centers was so much fun- trying the bamboo-stick dance with my friends felt great!” Meanwhile, one parent reflected, “Seeing my child stand confidently before a crowd to share their research was truly inspiring.”
This celebration of inquiry and courage reminded us that PYPx is as much about personal growth as it is about academic achievement. In The Annex, our cherished exhibition space - Grade 5 students evolve into reflective thinkers, ready to navigate their next educational chapter with confidence and compassion.
